Studio 14 Denia - The Sewing GroupStudio 14 Denia started the Sewing group in January 2003. I love nice clothes but I am often disappointed with the finish of ready to wear garments. I have been sewing for half a century have spent many years searching out time saving tips and techniques for improving the look, fit and finish to my clothes. I also like the individuality of producing one-off’s that nobody else will be seen in. How many of us have turned up to a grand function only to find another lady wearing the same dress. I have tried laughing it off saying, ”It proves what good taste we both have”, but it doesn’t always work. I wanted to share my knowledge with other like-minded ladies and so the group was formed. Our informal get-togethers take place every Thursday, 2.00 to 5.00pm. Each session lasts for 3 hours and is for up to 6 ladies (or gentlemen). Baby Lock Sewing machines, over-lockers, cover-stitch and blind hemmers are all provided, although ladies may want to bring their own machines to learn new techniques for that particular machine. Most ladies like to bring their own sewing tools. Tea or coffee and biscuits are provided.
The sewing sessions are freeform and ladies may bring sewing of any type. Subjects covered are many. Help is given with choosing a pattern, selecting suitable materials, altering the pattern for a perfect fit, laying the pattern on the material, making sure the grain lines are correct, cutting out, marking and tailor-tacking. Cutting out interfacing and attaching to the fabric pieces as needed. When it comes to the actual sewing, many hints and short cuts will be learned along the way to give a professional finish, to the final project or garment. We also discuss every thing under the sun and pass on tips on every subject. Whether you are new to the area or not, it is a great way of making new friends and discovering more about the people and area we live in, or making that unique one-off creation.
This is Mavis, wearing an outfit she has created in the group. The outfit consists of a short sleeved buttoned top featuring a patterned side which is fully reversible to the terracotta side to match the terracotta trousers. |
